FROM MODESTY TOWARDS IMMODESTY

Imad: Honestly brother I don’t understand what you are trying to do. You have issues with different brands marketing their stuff on billboards? But why? I mean what harm these simple ads are causing you?
Sarim: Look I don’t have issues with these brands neither with their stuff rather I have problem with the content they use to promote their products. Take the example of models. How inappropriately they are dressed whereas if you closely observe then you will notice that these ads on billboards aren’t ‘just’ selling the products but they are causing a severe damage to the society.
Imad: Oh yes. Now you will talk about all those social norms that men should not look at women. See bro I have a better option for you just simply ‘lower your gaze and move on’. Live your life and let others live too because to be very honest your little struggles in this regard won’t help much.
Sarim: Come on it is not that simple Imad. Yes I can lower my gaze and move on but what about millions of other people who are getting extensively influenced by this significant exposure to immodesty and vulgarity.
Imad: Haha Sarim man you are taking it way too difficult. Look at that billboard. Hmm I know that’s looking pretty provocative. But you know what? this is going to be removed within next 15-20 days and then it will be GONE forever. That’s it. How can it actually influence anyone within this short time period?
Sarim: Umm Imad tell me one thing. Would you like to marry a man?
Imad: WHAT??? Come on what sort of a question is that??
Sarim: Naah. Tell me I am serious.
Imad: Absolutely not!! I am not mentally retarded to commit such a thing. Plus this is against the fundamental human nature.
Sarim: Ohk! Imad if that is the case then surely you will be shocked to know that something which you consider against human nature and an utterly retarded thing is actually becoming normal and well accepted in some parts of the world.
Imad: Of course I know that’s in America right.
Sarim: Yes and have you ever thought that how come the most ‘civilized’ nation has accepted something against nature as a normal human behavior??
Imad: What are you trying to say? I am not exactly getting your point.
Sarim: Look Imad you talked about that provoking billboard ad which will be removed shortly but you know what until it will be removed it will cause immense damage to the human psychology. Actually we all have a natural sense of modesty embedded in us by Allah (swt). But when we are continuously exposed to such immoral and vulgar stuff then our sense of modesty gets deteriorated and eventually it vanishes. For instance, you must have observed that children feel literally ashamed and exhausted if they see on-screen romance or opposite gender with minimum clothes. However, we grownups take it as something very normal while feeling shame when we see anyone actually into the state of ‘sin’. But before that everything is perfectly fine for us even if the girl or guy is wearing the shortest possible dress. This happened to us because slowly and gradually our ‘true’ sense of modesty faded away. When modesty vanishes then immodesty takes its place which literally has no boundaries. It actually makes human beings commit the vicious sins such as marrying within the same gender. This is why I am concerned for these billboards. They aren’t directly harming the society but they are making path for immodesty to slip into our lifestyles little by little. Plus they are more dangerous because we cannot skip looking at them. I mean everyone has to work outside and when you move out you definitely have to see them. This seems such a small issue that people don’t even bother to talk about it but you know what 10-20 years down the road these simple advertisements will be one of the causes for girls getting involved into filthiest activities while guys having all sorts of questionable relationships. This might sound a super hypothetical statement to you but then you must not forget what Prophet s.a.w.w said:
Narrated Abu Mas’ud:
….. If you don’t feel ashamed do whatever you like.
Imagine yourself in place of Imad.
Even if you are not convinced At least you can THINK about it.
